Postponing retirement of space shuttle
Posted By nikki on August 31, 2008
I was reading in the news today that NASA is considering extending the usable life of the current space shuttle Discovery past its original planned retirement year of 2010. The reason given was that the replacement space shuttle is not scheduled to be ready to replace it until 2015, which leaves a five year gap of having no space shuttle in service. Seems to me that five year gap could be problematic; and I agree that they would consider fixing up the current space shuttle to run longer, or move forward the date of service for the new one. A five year gap seems to be an unacceptably long time to not have a space shuttle available!
